This equipment list is meant to help you compile your personal gear for a mountaineering expedition. Most items are required. Please consider each item carefully and be sure you understand the function of each piece of equipment before you substitute or delete items. Keep in mind that this list has been carefully compiled by George Dunn, the expedition organizer. Don't cut corners on the quality of your gear.

[  ]Boots: Sturdy, lug-sole, leather climbing boots. Plastic double boots are not acceptable
[  ]Socks: 2 changes of heavy wool or synthetic, with liners
[  ]Gaiters Knee length
[  ]Longjohns: Synthetic tops and bottoms
[  ]Pants: Synthetic stretch climbing pants or wool or light fleece
[  ]Rainpants: With full length zippers to go on over boots and crampons
[  ]Shirt: Expedition weight (100 weight "Polartec"), or light wool
[  ]Fleece Jacket: Or wool sweater
[  ]Rain/wind shell: Waterproof/breathable jacket with hood
[  ]Warm parka: Down or synthetic filled with hood -- doesn't have to be expedition weight. A sewn through down jacket or heavy insulated ski parka will do.
[  ]Hat Wool or fleece
[  ]Sun hat
[  ]Gloves: 2 pair. Gore-Tex ski gloves or fleece lined climbing gloves are best
[  ]Mittens: Wool or fleece with stormproof overshells
[  ]Ice axe: 70 cm. preferred with a wrist leash
[  ]Crampons: 12 point, reasonably sharp
[  ]Climbing helmet
[  ]Prussik slings: Bring pretied 7 mm. prussik loops. These can be purchased in Italy as necessary.
[  ]Seat harness
[  ]Carabiners: One locking and two non-locking
[  ]Climbing helmet UIAA rated climbing helmet
[  ]Headlamp: Bring extra set of batteries and extra bulb. Flashlight is insufficient
[  ]Sunglasses: Very dark, with side shields. Spare pair recommended
[  ]Water bottles: 2 one-quart, wide mouth, plastic bottles
[  ]Suncream: And lip balm, SPF 15 or higher
[  ]Pack: Internal frame pack with capacity of 3,000 cubic inches. Leave the big McKinley packs home.
[  ]First aid kit: Each individual must carry a small personal first aid kit to avoid depletion of the group kit. You should have the following items: aspirin or Tylenol; antacid (Pepto Bismol, Rolaids, etc.); Bandaids; athletic tape; moleskin.
[  ]Hiking shorts
[  ]T-shirts
[  ]Lightweight toilet kit

Optional items:
[  ]Camera and extra battery
[  ]Neck gaiter Or light balaclava
[  ]Ski goggles
[  ]Ear plugs: For those nights in the huts

*Note: Each participant will be required to purchase their own "Via Ferratta" self belay system in Italy for use on the rock climbs. It includes a shock absorbing system and rope used to clip in to fixed anchors. This will cost approximately $40 U.S.
